How much does it cost?

Monthly Premiums

Your premiums will depend upon the plan you choose (Customer Only or Customer and Spouse) and the amount of coverage you require ($25,000, $50,000, or $100,000). Follow the chart below to determine your monthly payment amount:

Rates are subject to provincial sales tax where applicable.

These rates apply to any age and do not increase with age.

Payment

Premiums are payable monthly by credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or by pre-authorized debit (“PAD”). The monthly premium will be deducted from your account (as specified by you) on or about the first day of each month.

Please note, if you choose to pay by pre-authorized debit (“PAD”), you will need to download and complete the Pre-authorized Debit Agreement form (440 KB) and attach it to your application (501kb). You can send them by mail to:

Grace Period

A grace period of 30 calendar days is allowed for the full payment of any premium due and your insurance will stay in force during this period. Your insurance will terminate if the premium due has not been paid in full on or before the end of the grace period.

Payment of Benefit

Benefits are paid if death resulting from an accident occurs within 365 days of the date of the accident, provided the accident occurs while the coverage is in force.


Special Extra Benefit

An additional $50,000 benefit will be paid for death resulting from an accident while travelling anywhere in the world as a fare-paying passenger on a regularly scheduled airline.


When does my coverage begin and terminate?

Your coverage begins on the first day of the month coincident with or following the date your application is received by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc., provided your first month's premium has been received by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. A Certificate of Insurance and Insurance Benefits Summary will then be sent to you for your 60-day review and acceptance.

An insured person's insurance will terminate immediately on the earliest of the following dates:

  • The termination date of the Policy;
  • The due date of any unpaid premiums if the insured customer fails to pay the required premium within the Grace Period;
  • The date an insured customer reaches 80 years of age;
  • The date of the death of an insured customer;
  • The date that Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. receives written notice from the insured customer requesting cancellation of all or part of the insurance;
  • With respect to an insured spouse, the earliest of the above, the date an insured spouse reaches age 80.

Whom can I name as my beneficiary?

You can name any person as your beneficiary. Plus, you can change your beneficiary by written instruction at any time, unless irrevocably appointed. You are the beneficiary of your spouse's coverage unless another beneficiary is named. To change your beneficiary designation, download the request form here.


Renewability

Your coverage is automatically renewable to age 80, at which time the coverage terminates. As long as your premiums are paid when due, and you remain an ATB Financial customer, your coverage cannot be cancelled by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. unless the Master Group Policy is terminated.


Are there any limitations or exclusions?

Accidental Death benefits will not be payable when death occurs as a result of any of the following:

  • Suicide or attempted suicide while sane or insane;
  • Intentional self-inflicted injury while sane or insane;
  • An injury sustained while under the influence of alcohol or of any drug taken voluntarily and not prescribed by a licensed physician;
  • Travel in an aircraft other than as a fare-paying passenger on a regularly scheduled airline;
  • Insurrection or war, whether war be declared or not, or participation in any riot or civil disorder;
  • Service as a combatant or non-combatant in the military, naval or air force of any country;
  • Voluntary inhalation of gas; or
  • Sickness, either mental or physical.

A 50% reduction of benefit applies at age 75.


How do I make a claim?

Before paying any benefit, a claim form needs to be completed and sent to Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. Please call Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. toll-free at 1-800-266-5667 (7:30am to 5:30pm MST) or email claims@ia.ca to obtain appropriate forms and for details on claims and procedures.
